Richard Swift and Geoff Lound, the two Australians who qualified to play the US Amateur in Michigan this week, face an almost impossible task following the end of round one, to make the top 64 and advance to the matchplay at the end of round two.

Lound from Sydney, who attends the University of Illinois and Swift also from New South Wales had first rounds of 78 and 79 respectively, to be well back in the three hundred and twelve man field.

The qualifying is being led by Seattle’s Connor Robbins, Texan Zach Atkinson and Tennesse’s Alan Weal with first round 65’s. Included in fourth place at 67 are three of the pre tournament favourites D.J. Trahan, John Klauk and Brian Quackenbush.

The event, being played at Oakland Hills, finishes with a thirty-six hole final on Sunday.
