Retief Goosen and Japanese superstar Toshi Izawa lead the first round of the 2002 NEC Invitational on -6 (65), with Tiger Woods three shots back following a double bogey at 17th hole, after a rouge iron-shot found the water. Woods has won three NEC Invitational titles and will be looking to prove himself this week after just missing a win at last week’s 2002 US PGA Championship.
Craig Perks takes the early Australasian lead at -3 (68) while Greg Norman and Robert Allenby are just one shot back and just four strokes from the leaders. Norman opened his account with a double-bogey 6 at the 10th hole (his 1st) and then followed that up with a bogey at the 16th (his 7th hole) and recovered with a mighty eagle at the 18th (his 9th). Norman and Allenby closed with 69 a piece and in equal 20th.
Kiwi Michael Campbell, Peter Lonard and Stuart Appleby carded -1 (70), Craig Parry 1 (72), while Steve Elkington floundered with an opening round 5 (76) that left him near the bottom of the exclusive 78-man field at 73rd.
