Jill McGill and Danielle Ammaccapane each fired -6 (66) to take a share of the lead after the first round of the 2002 Betsy King Classic. Ammaccapane, who enjoyed a bogey-free round, is looking to end a four-year drought on the LPGA Tour, with her last win coming at the Safeway LPGA Golf Championship in 1998.

Michelle McGann and Carri Wood plus Australians Wendy Doolan and Michelle Ellis all closed at 67. Ellis continues her amazing turn around in form of late with two second-place finishes in as many weeks, including her 2nd at the recent British Open. Annika Sorenstam and Juli Inkster, number one and two on the 2002 moneylist, are not playing this week. Korean superstar, Se Ri Pak finished with a -2 (70).

Rachel Teske, who won the 1998 Betsy King title, sits in a six-way tie at -3 (69) with Karrie Webb and Karen Pearce another two strokes back at -1 (T33). Jan Stephenson posted 1 (T82) and Fiona Pike is at 2.
