Allenby fires record 63 at NEC to share lead

Robert Allenby fired a course record -8 (63), the lowest round of his career, to move into a tie for the lead with Steve Lowery following the second round of the 2002 NEC Invitational. Allenby shot an eagle and five birdies in his round of 63 to take a share of the lead at -10. Allenby’s previous best round this year was a 65 at the 2002 Advil Western Open.
Stephen Lowery claimed a share of the lead with a -6 (65) to back up his first round 67 and Lowery and Allenby take a one stroke lead into the weekend. First round co-leader Toshi Izawa failed to make a move and blew out to a 73 and is at -4 along with three-time defending champion Tiger Woods. Izawa’s first round co-leader, South African Retief Goosen, is at -9 following a 68, while Justin Rose sits at -8 and Phil Mickelson is one further back at -7.
Craig Parry follows up Allenby as next best for the Australasians following a -6 (65), his best round of what has been an ordinary season for Parry. He moved from 48th into a nine-way tie at 8th to close the day at -5. Kiwi Craig Perks is another stroke back at -4 and in equal 17th, while fellow countryman Michael Campbell posted a 69 to finish at -2 (T22).
