Just a few weeks after the announcement by Nick Flanagan that he would turn pro on the Monday after the British Open, the man who Flanagan defeated at the US Amateur in 2003, Casey Wittenberg, has announced his decision to follow suit.

Still only nineteen, Wittenberg has signed with IMG and will be “playing for pay” as from the Cialis Western Open where he has an invite and will get a start the following week at the John Deere Classic. There are also three or four other starts already locked in place.

Wittenberg had originally intended to return to Oklahoma State but clearly, given his recent performances at the Masters (13th) and the US Open (36th), a decision to take advantage of the profile and momentum he has going for him right now was logical.

A brilliant amateur, Wittenberg turns professional at the top of amateur golf. In the latest amateur rankings he is currently rated the number one amateur in the men’s game ahead of Bill Haas who plays the Booz Allen event this week, in his first event as a professional and Nick Flanagan.
