After their equal second placing at the Smurfit European Open, Australians Richard Green and Peter O’Malley have guaranteed themselves places in the 133rd Open Championship at Royal Troon next week, taking the Australasian tally to 23.
Green, from Victoria, topped the mini Order of Merit list with Frenchman Jean-Francois Remesy, after finishing tied for second with O’Malley and Lee Westwood behind Retief Goosen at the European Open, whilst O’Malley was the leading non-exempt player at the weekend.
Green has shown good form coming into the Open. He also tied for second with Aussie Nick O’Hern at the French Open last month.
Bathurst-born O’Malley is improving with each event, having finished in a share of 18th, 12th, tenth, sixth and now second in his last five tournaments.
With 23 Australasians so far entered, the contingent makes up 15% of the field, with the possibility of more Australasians making it through after Local Final Qualifying next weekend.
156 players will compete in the 133rd Open Championship, with the leading 70 and those tied on 70th place after two rounds, qualifying for the final 36 holes.
