AGU Executive Director Colin Phillips announced today that the new US PGA Champion Rich Beem would be coming to Australia in November to play the 2002 Holden Australian Open at Melbourne’s Victoria Golf Club.

Beem, 32, won his first Major Championship recently when he took the 84th PGA Championship at Hazeltine Country Club in Minnesota. This was his second victory of the season and follows his win in The International in Colorado. He moves from 76 to 21 on the official world rankings as a result of these performances.

A regular on the PGA Tour since 1999, Beem’s first victory came after only his 12th start on tour when he won the Kemper Open. He has won over AUD$5 million on the Tour this year.

“There is no doubt that Rich Beem has emerged as one of the most talented stars of the US Tour”, Phillips said. “To see him play in this year’s Open will provide a spectacle that will ensure an exciting event.”

The Holden Australian Open is to be played at Victoria Golf Club 21-24 November 2002. Prize-money $1.5 million.
