Continuing what has been an impressive run by Australians in amateur golf events in the US this season, Queenslander Bronson La Cassie has opened with a first round of 65 to share the lead after round one of the Western Amateur being played in Benton Harbour, Michigan.

La Cassie has just completed a successful first year at the University of Minnesota where he earned All Big Ten and Big Ten, Freshman of the Year Honours.

La Cassie is tied with 22-year-old Tyler Hall, a graduate from Kansas University, after the first of four rounds of stroke play in an event that is steeped in history. The first staging of the event was back in 1899 and modern day winners include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus and Justin Leonard.

The field will be cut to the low fifty and ties after round two, the final thirty six holes being played on Friday. On the completion of the stroke play the top sixteen will advance to the math play phase.

Other Australians to do well are Aron Price and Neven Basic, who share fourth place with first round 67’s with Andrew Mckenzie, Luke Hickmott and James Nitties in 18th place with rounds of 69.
