New South Welshman, Aron Price, improved what may have already been an outside chance of Australian Eisenhower Team selection, when he produced a last round of nine under par 61 to lead the qualifiers by seven shots at the Western Amateur in Benton Harbour, Michigan. Price was home in 29 today, recording an eagle two at the par four last hole of his afternoon round.
Just two weeks ago Price won the prestigious Players Amateur Championship in South Carolina.
Price, from Oyster Bay in New South Wales, has just completed his third year at Georgia Southern University where he has been a star and led the local qualifying for the US Open at his venue in May. He did not make it to the US Open but clearly his time playing collegiate golf in the US has seen his game improve in leaps and bounds.
Four other Australians have also advanced to the final sixteen who will face off in the match play phase of the tournament. Queensland’s Bronson La Cassie and New South Welshman, Andrew McKenzie, shared fourth place at six under, nine behind Price, West Australian Michael Sim was 7th at five under and NSW’s James Nitties is in 12th place at three under. Nitties had a final round 74, ten shots worse than his morning round of 64.
