After defeating fellow New South Welshman Aron Price, 3&2 in the semi-final earlier in the day, James Nitties staged a remarkable comeback from being four down at the turn in his match against Ryan Moore to eventually lose in a playoff at the Western Amateur in Benton Harbour, Michigan.

22-year-old Moore from Washington State had established his big lead with an outward nine of 31 but then watched as 21-year-old Nitties came back strongly over the closing holes to halve the match at the 18th. Moore holed a long putt at the first to take the title.

It was a long and tough day for Moore as he had gone extra holes in his morning semi-final against Californian, Peter Tomasulo winning that match at the 20th.

Moore has won the US Public Links, the Sahalee Players Championship and now the Western Amateur this summer making him the number one ranked amateur in the US.
