US Ryder Cup Captian Hal Sutton has added Stewart Cink and Jay Haas as wild card picks to his team to contest the event from Sept 17th through 19th at the Oakland Hills Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan.
Haas and Cink join Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, David Toms, Chad Campbell, Chris Di Marco, Fred Funk and Chris Riley to contest the event against a European Team that will be named on August 30th.
In a press conference today in Milwaukee, Sutton outlined his reasons for the choices saying that he had a lot of quality players to choose from including Justin Leonard, whose last hole bogey on Sunday now carries even greater significance, Scott Verplank who was injured during the PGA Championship and Jeff Maggert who withdrew from the PGA Championship to be with his wife who was about to give birth to their twins.
Sutton emphasised his desire to have on the team, players who were good iron players and putters and who could win. As to whether they will be winners on Sept 19th remains to be seen, but he has a very strong team both in experience and talent.
