IN: News | US PGA | Bell Canadian Open (2002) | Round One | 06 Sep 2002
New Zealand's Grant Waite fired a -8 (64), his best round of the year, to close the first day of play at the Bell Canadian Open with a two stroke lead. Waite has only finished in the Top 25 once this year and had missed four cuts leading in to last week's Air Canada Championship, where he finished in a tie for 42nd. Per-Ulrik Johansson, Billy Andrade, Neal Lancaster and Aussie Greg Chalmers make up the group sitting on -6 and in equal second place.
Vijay Singh posted a -5 (67) to take 6th place along with Kiwi Frank Nobilo. Singh is amongst only a handful of "name" players inside the Top 15 with most choosing to take the week off with the WGC American Express and the Ryder Cup only a few weeks away.
Geoff Ogilvy and Rod Pampling share 10th place after shooting 68 a piece with Queensland's John Senden finished with -2. Steve Allen and Paul Gow closed at -1 and in equal 43rd.
