New Zealand financial services leader ING, today confirmed a three-year sponsorship deal to secure the naming rights to the New Zealand PGA Championship, one of the key events on the PGA Tour of Australasia golfing calendar.

The USD$600,000 event, co-sanctioned with the US PGA Nationwide Tour will be staged at its permanent home, the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch from February 24-27, 2005.

Paul Fyfe, Managing Director of ING New Zealand said, "We are delighted to be the naming sponsor for the 2005 event. ING has been associated with New Zealand golf for over five years through numerous charity golfing events and the televised ING Golf programmes. The NZPGA represents the pinnacle of this long-established golfing association.

“The quality of the 2004 event, coupled with the commitment of the PGA Tour of Australasia, the US PGA Nationwide Tour and the City of Christchurch to make the 2005 New Zealand PGA Championship even better, meant the decision to increase our involvement was an easy one.

“We expect the 2005 Championship once again to be a well-organised event, with a top-class field, at one of the world’s most beautiful golfing venues. In fact, the perfect occasion to showcase our brand.”

“We are delighted that ING has decided to extend its relationship with golf by lending its name to the New Zealand PGA Championship for the next three years,” said PGA Tour of Australasia CEO, Andrew Georgiou.

“ING has supported the New Zealand PGA for some time and to see this support grow to a naming rights sponsorship of the event reflects the strength and confidence of the partnership and the value of golf as a sponsorship vehicle.”

The 2005 ING New Zealand PGA Championship will also have a new television partner in TV3. TV3 will broadcast the newly branded event live each day and provide pictures to a global audience of in excess of 160 million households.

The announcement of ING’s sponsorship has been warmly welcomed and is endorsed by the City of Christchurch’s investment to secure the Championship in the Canterbury region for the next three years.

“Securing ING as the Naming Sponsor will ensure the championships will continue to be hosted in Christchurch for many years to come. The city looks forward to working with ING to ensure the 2005 event is even better than last year,” said Garry Moore, Mayor of Christchurch.

NZPGA Chairman Richard Ellis said, “The board of the NZPGA and our members is proud to be associated with the ING brand and acknowledge ING’s commitment to golf in New Zealand.”
