Day racks up another title at Gary Player Classic

16-year-old Jason Day, today added yet another title to his amazing 2004 collection when he ran out the winner of the Gary Player Classic at the Pacific Golf Club by six shots.
It wasn’t quite as easy as that margin would suggest however as at one stage in the middle of today’s final round, Day was challenged and joined in the lead by the Coolangatta Tweeds Heads teenager, Jake Younan Wise.
Day has had an arduous campaign of late, returning on Monday from a win at the New Zealand Under 19 Championship in Auckland, playing a key role in the win by Australia in the Claire Higson trophy last week and a week earlier winning all five of his matches in the successful Queensland Interstate side.
He appeared to be feeling the effects of all that golf in the middle of his round today when he double bogeyed the tenth hole to provide an opening for Younan-Wise. Younan-Wise would return the favour three holes later however when he double bogeyed the 13th hole which allowed a rather weary Day off the hook. Day was able to go on and win by six.
Day was playing in the 16-17 year old division but such was the emphatic nature of his win that no other golfer in the field got any closer than six shots in any division.
Day adds the time honoured Gary Player event to the Australian Junior, Queensland Amateur, New Zealand Under 19 and Junior World titles he has won in 2004.
Eagle Chan from the Oxley Golf Club won the under 15 title and Club Pelican’s Chris Sarquis the 18-20 age group in a playoff over Brett Rankin.
