Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal is a pleasant surprise on the latest list of additions to the field for the 2004 Chrysler Championship.
He is joined as Thursday additions to the Commitment List by Stephen Ames, currently ninth on the PGA TOUR Official Money List, and veteran pros Brent Geiberger and Kent Jones.
Olazabal’s 28 worldwide victories include six on the PGA TOUR. He put on the green jacket as Masters champion in 1994 and 1999. This will be the first time he has competed on the Copperhead.
Ames, a native of Trinidad who also holds Canadian citizenship, won his first PGA TOUR event, the Cialis Western Open, in July. His 2004 winnings of more than US$3 million are more than double any previous year on TOUR. He has recorded 10 top 10 finishes so far.
Olazabal and Ames add to an international contingent that also was joined this week by Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson.
Jacobson, who just missed a spot on the 2004 European Ryder Cup squad, has opted not to defend his Volvo Masters title. He has been primarily competing on the PGA TOUR this year, with five top-10 finishes. A three-time winner on the 2003 European Tour, he is 34th on the latest Official World Golf Rankings. He also has two top-10 finishes in 2004 European Tour events.
The US$5 million Chrysler Championship will be held October 25-31 on the Copperhead Course at the Westin Innisbrook Golf Resort. Pros have until Friday, October 22 to commit to the field. A list of the latest commitments can be accessed at chryslerchampionship.com.
