It’s been a busy and exciting 2004 season for Phil Mickelson, but not so busy or exciting that he won’t be returning to the Chrysler Championship. Mickelson, who thrilled golf fans with his dramatic 72nd-hole birdie at the Masters, has added his name to the tournament’s Official Commitment List.
“We have felt confident that Phil Mickelson would be returning to the Chrysler Championship this year, but it always is good to see that name on the commitment list,” says Tournament Director Gerald Goodman. “Phil is one of the most popular golfers in the world and we know that his many fans in the area will be delighted to see him in action. We expect some other top names to be added to the list in the next few weeks.”
Mickelson did not fare well on the challenging Copperhead Course in 2003, missing the cut in the Chrysler Championship. He has said that some adjustments he made in playing style late in his second round in the event helped carry over to his success this year.
The fourth-ranked player in the world, Mickelson ranks second on the PGA TOUR Official Money List with US$5,672,323 in winnings this year. In addition to his win at the Masters, he captured the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and finished in the top six of all four Major Championships this year. Since 1991, he was won 23 times on the PGA TOUR.
Mickelson and Jose Maria Olazabal, himself a two-time winner of the green jacket, are the latest victors of golf’s Major Championships to commit to the 2004 Chrysler Championship.
The field also currently includes Ernie Els, Paul Azinger, Rich Beem, Mark Brooks, Jim Furyk, Lee Janzen, Bernhard Langer, Justin Leonard, Jeff Sluman and Mike Weir who own Major titles. Vijay Singh and 2003 Chrysler Championship winner Retief Goosen are also expected to be added in the near future.
