The Australian team of Sarah Jane Kenyon, Sarah Kemp and Katy Jarokowicz have made a slow start to the Espirito Santo Trophy in Puerto Rico, their team score of 8 over placing them in 22nd position after round one.
Playing in one of the later tee times today, the Australians were forced to cope with a heavy deluge of rain that interrupted play for thirty minutes or so in the mid-afternoon.
Kenyon and Kemp both recorded rounds of 76 and as the event format dictates, the leading two of three scores in each team on each day are counted. Jarocowicz, after an opening birdie, fell away to finish with an 83. After playing the Greg Norman designed River Course in round one, the Australians tackle the significantly more difficult Ocean Course in round two.
Canada lead the event after round one, their team total of 7 under leading the favourites, the United States, by two. The Canadian Mary Anne Lapointe was simply brilliant in leading the individual standings after round one, her opening 67 including five birdies and no bogeys.
Maria Martinez of Argentina, Sweden’s Karin Sjodin and the American Jane Park were on 69, sharing second place.
Sarah Nicholson (76) and Claire Dury (77) were the best of the New Zealanders, their score of 8 over sharing 22nd place with the Australians.
