Gary Simpson added a third round of 65 to his opening rounds of 63 and 64 to be at 24 under and ahead by two as the field at the Toyota Queensland PGA Championship tees off in round four.
“I got off to a good start again today,” said Simpson in his lunch break between the third and fourth rounds. “Both Kurt and I birdied the first two holes and it just kept flowing. I made two bogeys but plenty of birdies. There was some good camaraderie between both Kurt and I and we were talking to each other working on the basis that we wanted to finish first and second in the tournament.”
“I’m making some good putts, not hitting many bad shots and giving myself good angles into the pins. There will be some tough pins out there this afternoon and took the time this morning to observe the spots they had marked for the flags for this afternoon’s round.”
Barnes also enjoyed playing with Simpson for the third day in a row. “It’s nice to play with Gary again,” he said while grabbing a bite to eat. “We carted each other along and we were both keen to put a gap between ourselves and those behind. To a large extent we did just that. My own goal was to peg a couple of shots back and managed to get one back and now I will be looking to do the same again this afternoon.”
Simpson leads by two over Barnes and they have opened up a six shot gap to Michael Wright with a further shot back to Queensland amateur Adam Blyth.
The final round is now expected to finish at around 4.30 pm EST.
