Teenage golfing sensation Jason Day wants to wear the green jacket, the green jacket awarded to the winner of the 2005 NEC Master of the Amateurs. And the way Jason is playing, another “green” at Augusta may well be on the cards in the not too distant future.
Just two weeks after his 17th birthday, fresh out of school and already 2004 World Junior Amateur Champion, the young Queenslander teed off in last weekend’s Australian Open. Apparently undaunted by the big names around him, Jason finished a commendable seven shots over for the tournament, the same score as two time Open Champion Aaron Baddeley, and five shots better than any other amateur in the field.
A very excited Tournament Director of the NEC Master of the Amateurs Peter Mann said the tournament at Yarra Yarra Golf Club from January 24-27 was a perfect stepping-stone for the young prodigy in his plan for a professional golfing career.
“His decision to play the NEC Master of the Amateurs virtually guarantees a clash of the country’s cream of amateur golf. The four round event is already one of the most talked about in Australian golf. Now there will be a lot more to talk about in the lead up to the 2005 NEC Master of the Amateurs”.
The Chief Executive Advisor to NEC Business Solutions, Sam Shiroki said “NEC is delighted to have the world Amateur Champion, Jason Day, compete for the coveted Green Jacket in this very prestigious tournament, which is in keeping with NEC’s commitment to the ’grass roots’ of golf.”
As well as the World Junior Amateur Championship, Jason has this year also collected the Queensland Amateur and Australian Junior titles. The 2005 NEC Master of the Amateurs looms as another piece in the jigsaw on his way to a professional golfing career.
