Leaney fires 64 to lead German Masters

Australian Stephen Leaney fired a superb opening round 64 to close the day in the outright lead at -8 while South African Retief Goosen is just one stroke back at -7 (65) at the 2002 German Masters. Goosen needs a win or several solid performances to overtake Ernie Els, who currently holds the number one spot on the Volvo Order of Merit.
Els, closed late in the day with a 69, and trails Goosen by four strokes and the leader by five.
Thomas Bjorn fired a 67 to put him top of the nine European Ryder Cup members playing this week. Bjorn's round included an eagle and five birdies on the back nine close the day in equal fourth place and three strokes off the pace. 2002 US PGA champion, Rich Beem, dropped three shots over the final six holes to post a -1 (71).
Peter O'Malley leads the Australasian contingent behind Leaney at -5 and in equal fourth. Peter Fowler is one stroke back at -4 and in a tie for 14th while Kiwi Stephen Scahill and Jarrod Moseley posted 70 each to close in 37th with -2. Peter Lonard was the surprise of the day, finishing at 2 and in a tie for 100th place. Lonard has not missed a cut on the US PGA Tour season this year and will need to make amends in the second round to avoid missing the cut.
