Update: Heavy rain in Melbourne has caused the cancellation of the Pro-Am
“Norman, Hewitt, Warne and Tomkins – an awesome foursome” declared Heineken Classic Tournament Director Rod Leembruggen when he released the Heineken Classic Pro Am draw for this Wednesday at Royal Melbourne.
“They are champions of their respective sports and it is fantastic that they are able to join Greg. I am not sure what shape Lleyton will be in after his huge weekend but I’m sure he will cope. I’m more worried about his coach Roger Rasheed who is carrying Norman’s bag. I asked him if he was going to caddy for Lleyton – he said he had done enough for him this last fortnight.” Leembruggen added.
Pro Am’s are traditionally the domain for the sponsor however the Heineken Classic has continually presented premier sporting and media personalities to play with leading international golfers. As well as Hewitt, Warne and Tomkins, Australian Open Mixed Doubles champion and Golf Professional Scott Draper, Test Cricketer Andrew Symonds, West Indian Cricket great Courtney Walsh, Rex Hunt, Sam Newman and ex-Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett will all grace the Royal Melbourne fairways.
“I’m a little worried about Courtney” a slightly nervous Leembruggen admitted. “I think that he holds the record for the most number of ducks in test cricket – something like 43, so making contact with the ball has obviously been a problem. At 6’5” it is obviously a long way down to the ball; I just hope that the shot he perfected was the straight drive. I’m not sure whether to ask Andrew Symonds to field at cover or midwicket when they tee off around 8.00am. Whatever happens, I’m sure their other partner Rex Hunt will have something to say; it might not be yibbidy yibbidah though"
Players tee off from 7:00 am on Wednesday morning with the main drawcards due out at 11:50 am. There is no entry fee to the course on Pro Am day and as well as Greg Norman and his troupe of celebrities, spectators will have the opportunity to follow the in form Colin Montgomerie, three times winner Ernie Els, Dane Thomas Bjorn, Peter Lonard, Adam Scott, Nick Faldo and many others.
The Heineken Classic starts on February 3rd at Royal Melbourne with the Pro Am to be played on Wednesday 2nd.
