Australian Terry Price began the defence of his Holden New Zealand Open crown when his team triumphed in the Pro-Am tournament at Gulf Harbour today.

Price led his Emirates team including Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker, radio host Willie Lose and Hugh Jones to a remarkable net score of 56, 16-under par.

They won on a countback from the Holden team led by the tournament’s top ranked player, Nick O’Hern, ranked 30 in the world, and included Laurence Davis, George Grey and Richard Osborne.

Both team played in the afternoon grouping, with 57 teams contesting the traditional tournament opener.

The 88th Holden New Zealand Open, boasting a record $1.5 million prizemoney and co-sanctioned with the European Tour for the first time, begins at the Whangaparaoa course tomorrow.
