Kiwi golfers out of NSW Amateur Matchplay

The four remaining New Zealand squad golfers all failed to progress after the first round of the New South Wales matchplay championship in Sydney today.

Doug Holloway (Hawkes Bay), Mark Purser and Mathew Holten (Waikato) and Brad Iles (Bay of Plenty) were beaten in their first round matches after qualifying from yesterday’s 72-hole Strokeplay championship.

All found themselves well down after the first 18 holes in the 36-hole matchplay format, although Iles and Holten took their matches to the 36th hole.

Iles was four-down with nine holes remaining before he was pipped by Do Hyun Kim (NSW) 1-down, while Holten was four-down after 18 holes but could not quite turn the tables on Adam Downton (NSW), also losing 1-down.

Holloway, the leading Kiwi qualifier, was 5-down after 18 holes before losing 5 and 4 to Tim Dykes (Wales) while Purser, 5-down after the first round against Brent McCullough (NSW) lost 6 and 5.

Earlier Holloway finished fourth in the Strokeplay with a six-under 282, while :Purser finished one shot behind. Purser led after 54 holes at 10-under par but faded with a final round five-over 77.

Holten and Iles finished in a share of 11th place on two-under par 286.
