Tiger Woods fired back to back rounds of -7 (65) to move two strokes clear at the 2002 American Express Championship. Woods came into the second day, one shot ahead of the field following a course record -7 (65), and despite and ordinary first few holes he proceeded to reel off seven birdies to finish at -14 at Mount Juliet in Ireland. The two rounds of 65 are all the more impressive when you think that Woods has only just made a major equipment change, moving from Titliest to Nike irons this week.
Jerry Kelly posted a 65, which included eight birdies and a bogey to take outright second place at -12. Another shot back from Kelly in a tie for third are David Toms and Steve Lowery, who both posted 67, while Retief Goosen closed the day with a 67 to take a share of fifth place at -10.
2002 British Open winner Ernie Els takes a share of sixth place along with Aussie Stuart Appleby and Englishman Gary Evans. Appleby leads the Australasian attack and is followed two strokes back by Kiwi Michael Campbell, who could catch Ernie Els on the moneylist with a $1 million win here this week.
2002 NEC Invitational winner, Craig Parry carded a 71 to slip from 10th to 26th at -5 and nine strokes off the pace. Lonard and Adam Scott closed the second round in equal 33rd at -4 while Robert Allenby is way back in 43rd place at -2.
