A record number of more than 215 amateur golfers from throughout the world have sought to play in the prestigious Riversdale Cup at the Riversdale Golf Club, in Melbourne on 11-14 March.

The 72-hole amateur tournament has attracted entries from 12 overseas countries, as well as all States, forcing the organisers to limit the cut to a handicap of one.

The event will celebrate its 110th year when players tee up in a bid to win the second oldest amateur golf tournament in Australia and one of premier tournaments of the Australian amateur schedule.

Current World and Australian Junior Champion, Jason Day, of Queensland; European Amateur Champion, Matthew Richardson of Great Britain; and former World and Australian Junior Champion and current Tasmanian Open champion Rick Kulacz, of Western Australia, will be among the 156 players who have gained a birth in the event.

Last year’s Riversdale Cup runner-up and AGU National Squad member Adam Porker, of Victoria, will be in the field also, along with the talented New Zealander Brad Iles, the country’s No.1 ranked amateur, who almost lost his life in freak accident when playing golf in the US last year.

Riversdale Club General Manager, Bob Taylor, said the record number of entries from one of the strongest group of players for many years forced the cut-off for the field to be limited to a handicap of one.

“The depth of talent in Australia, plus the reputation of the event with overseas golfers is attracting the best fields we have seen,” he said.
