Waikato golfer Mathew Holten has extended his lead midway through the prestigious Riversdale Cup international in Melbourne today.

The Te Aroha player shot a second round three-under par 69 for a two-round total of 135, nine-under par at Riversdale Golf Club, involving players from USA, England, Scotland, Singapore, Korea, New Zealand and the best from Australia.

Holten is two shots clear of Australian Mitchell Brown (NSW) with a further shot back to Victorian Andrew Martin.

Holten heads the New Zealand charge with Tauranga’s Brad Iles the next best on one-under par 143, Mark Purser (Hamilton) on 148 and Josh Geary (Tauranga) 150.

The players had to cope with fiercely hot conditions which made the fast and sloping greens more treacherous.

Holten was in superb touch and has hit 33 of 36 greens in regulation over the first two rounds. He missed three excellent birdie opportunities on the testing greens.

Purser, who shot an opening round 69, struggled throughout for a seven-over 79 while Iles improved with a two-under 70. Geary, out-of-sorts in the opening round 77, improved with a one-over 73.
