Tiger Woods birdied the 17th and 18th holes for a -5 (67) and a five shot lead following the third round of the 2002 American Express Championship in Ireland. Woods began the day two strokes ahead of the field after back-to-back rounds of 65 and then went on to post a -5 (67) to close the day at -19 and closer to winning the sixth World Golf Championship title of his career.
Despite another flawless performance from Woods, it was Scott McCarron who took the limelight today with a course-record 64, one better than Woods' and Duval's efforts earlier this week. His round included eight birdies and no bogeys and propelled him from 22nd to 2nd place.
Six players including David Toms, Scott McCarron (64), Steve Lowery and Jerry Kelly, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen share second place at -14 while Rocco Mediate takes outright eighth place at -13.
Stuart Appleby leads the ANZ Players despite a third round 70 dropping him from 6th to equal 10th. Michael Campbell also fell away to 23rd following a -1 (71). Robert Allenby made amends for his two opening rounds and fired a -5 (67) to leap from 43rd to equal 30th alongside Adam Scott.
