Scotland's Eric Ramsay wins Australian Amateur

IN: News | Australian Mens Amateur | Australian Amateur Championship (2005) | Wrap | by Bruce Young | 23 Mar 2005

25-year-old Eric Ramsay from Carnoustie in Scotland is the 2005 Australian Amateur Champion following his impressive win over local Andrew Tampion in the final today.

Tampion made a quick start to the final and was three up through six holes before Ramsay won eight of the next twelve holes to be two up at lunch.

After losing the first hole of the afternoon round, the Victorian staged a brief comeback but no sooner had he done so than the Scot was back extending his lead to be five up through the turn. The status quo remained until the 31st hole which Ramsay won with a par and it was all over 6 & 5.

Ramsay becomes the second Scot to win the coveted Australian Amateur Championship in recent years following in the footsteps of Jack Doherty who won in 2003 in Perth.

Ramsay's win will ensure a place at the next three Australian Open Championships (2005-2007) if he so chooses and exemption into the final stage of the Australasian Tour Q-School.
