Richard Green very unlucky to miss US Masters

Richard Green, who has taken his game to another level over the past twelve months, has unluckily missed out on a place at the US Masters despite the fact that he had made the cut at the Players Championship.

Inside the top fifty (49) in the World Ranking heading into this past week's event at Sawgrass, the Australian finished 46th there and it appeared that may just be good enough to remain inside the top fifty and take one of the last places available at Augusta starting next Thursday April 8th. A category existed for players inside the top fifty in the world ranking as at Sunday March 27th and with the Players Championship delayed one day, the final list was also delayed until this evening. Green was 53rd when the new list was displayed and as a result will not be in the field next week.

Green's final round of 77 today would be the difference between him being at Augusta for the first time or not. For Green however the last few months, where has completed his best year in Europe and won the Australasian Tour Order of Merit, have signalled a turnaround of fortunes and it may well be that this time next year he will be guaranteed a place at Augusta long before this category is finalised.

Another Australian to narrowly miss out was Geoff Ogilvy whose chance was lost with a missed cut at Sawgrass. Ogilvy was number 52 in the world prior to this week but is now 55. Rod Pampling, who is now outside the top fifty at 56th is in because of his money list position from 2004 and that he was inside the top fifty at the end of 2004.

Craig Parry on the other hand will earn one of the places available in that category by finishing in 35th place as at March 27th.

In all eight Australians will line up at Augusta including Adam Scott, Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Rod Pampling, Peter Lonard, Craig Parry, and debutantes Mark Hensby and Nick O'Hern.
