Pilgrim progresses in Tenerife on day two

Eleanor Pilgrim from Wales took the outright lead on seven-under-par after the second round of the Tenerife Ladies Open at Golf Costa Adeje.

The 27-year-old from Newport tacked a faultless four-under-par 68 onto her opening 69 to lead the tournament by one shot from Ludivine Kreutz from France who had a second 69 to take her to six-under-par.

Three players are one shot adrift on three-under. They are Sophie Sandolo from Italy, Miriam Nagl from Germany and England's Georgina Simpson.

The four players tied on three-under-par are Martina Eberl from Germany, Elin Ohlsson from Sweden, Gwladys Nocera from France and Nienke Nijenhuis from the Netherlands.

Pilgrim, who suffered a torrid 2004 season on the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour, finally had something to smile about after her four birdies at the first, 13th, 14th and 18th holes took straight into contention at the sun-drenched, sea-side course on the coast of the Atlantic.

"I'm feeling really excited and quite happy for a change", said Pilgrim, who was forced to return to LET qualifying school at the end of 2004 after missing 11 cuts out of 13 starts in her third season on Tour.

"Last season couldn't have been any worse for me really. Everything and everything around me was wrong on and off the course."

"I've been trying a few things for a little while and it's slowly kicking in. I've no expectations really I'm just trying to do what I should be doing."

Pilgrim has been working on every aspect of her game with her coach, David Llewellen, over the past year."

"We've been keeping it simple and trying to have fun because my golf has been much too serious lately to be honest," she said.

"My main goal has been preparation and I seem to have managed that quite well so far."

"It just so happens that the last two rounds have been good but who knows what's going to happen over the next two days."

Another player who took advantage of the sunshine and capricious breeze on day two was the ever-stylish Sandolo, who tied her lowest round with a five-under-par 67 to share the low score of the day with Eberl.

"Everything went fine today", said the 28-year-olf from Nice, who had seven birdies and two bogeys."

"I had two bogeys but it was a solid round and I love coming to Tenerife because the course is so beautiful."

"I was pretty confident before coming here because I've been playing well and practising a lot over the winter and I'm having a lot of fun with my golf."

Kreutz, who had a good finish, last week at the Thailand Ladies Open had a solid round where she hit 17 greens in regulation.

"I am trying to have fun on the course and my game is quite consistent, so I'm crossing my fingers for the next two days," she said.

The cut fell at four-over-par.
