Australian golfer Michael Sim has extended his lead midway through the third round of strokeplay at the New Zealand Amateur Championships in Palmerston North today.
Sim is three-under par after nine holes to be a remarkable 17-under par in the third round at Manawatu Golf Club, to hold a six shot advantage over compatriot Adam Porker who is at 11-under.
Strong, cold winds have made the Hokowhitu course a much tougher test today with only four of the leading 18 players under par through nine holes.
Sim leads the way at 17 under with six shots to Porker and a further two shots to the leading Kiwis Brad Iles and first round leader Travis O'Connell at nine-under par.
Several leading players are struggling including Mitchell Brown, who has dropped two shots after a four-putt, and fellow Australian Kurt Carlson who is four-over through nine holes to drop to four-under for the tournament.
The final round is scheduled for tomorrow with the leading 32 players qualifying for matchplay to fight for the New Zealand Amateur title.
