Nick Price, who has won a British Open and two PGA Championships in his 22-year professional career, has accepted a special exemption to compete in the 2005 US Open Championship, the United States Golf Association has announced.
The US Open will be played from June 16-19 at Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C. The special exemption was offered after a vote by the USGA Executive Committee.
Price, 48, has played in 18 US Opens, with a best finish of fourth in 1992 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and in 1998 at The Olympic Club. The top finisher at the 1994 British Open and a two-time winner of the PGA Championship (1992 and 1994), Price was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003. Earlier this year, he was presented the USGA’s annual Bob Jones Award in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
For the past 18 years, Price has been among the top 50 golfers in the World Rankings. He has won 18 PGA Tour events and 24 international professional events, including 14 on the South African Tour and 6 on the European Tour.
The US Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The 2004 Open was won by Retief Goosen, who also was the winner in 2001.
