Kurt Carlson wins Queensland Medal

Early tournament leader Kurt Carlson (Pacific) retained the lead mid-way through the final round of the Queensland Medal at the Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club this afternoon, and held on to win.
Scores of 71 and 70 today saw Carlson finish the tournament on 6 under par, one stroke ahead of Virginia's Justin Maker, who shot a 65 this morning to equal the course record. Many at the club rated the set-up of the course today as the toughest they had seen, making Maker's morning score even more meritorious.
There was no denying Carlson however, who set up the tournament with a 65 of his own in Wednesday's first round.
Kevin Lee (Pacific) and Nick Gibson (Springwood, NSW) shared 3rd place, at 2 under par 283.
Carlson was also awarded the Queensland Colts Championship title, which is played concurrently for Queensland-based players aged 18-23 years.
The 2005 Queensland Medal could mark the coming of age of the talented Carlson, who has previously represented the State at Junior and Colts level. He is a current member of the Queensland State Squad, and is expected to press for selection in the State (Open) Team later in the year.
Both the Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club and The Pines Sanctuary Cove were presented in magnificent condition for the players this week - a fact that Carlson and Maker readily acknowledged in accepting their trophies.
The top 32 qualifiers from today's Queensland Medal will contest the Queensland Amateur Championship at Redcliffe Golf Club, commencing on Wednesday 4th May, and concluding with a 36 hole final on Friday 6th May.
