Laura Diaz is the brightest young star of US ladies golf at present winning for the second time in two months after her maiden win on this tour in March at the Welsh's Circle K event.
Not that she is all that young at age 27 but she is in only her fourth year on the USLPGA after playing her early golf in Europe and on the Futures Tour. In her first and only full year in Europe in 19998 she was rookie of the year and it is clear that her time there did her no harm. She was second four times last year and now that she has found the winners circle there will be plenty more to come. There is just something about her demeanour and her game that suggest she is on track to become the next big star of US ladies golf.
She won by two from Rosie Jones with New Zealander Marnie McGuire, continuing an improvement in form of late, tied in third with Italy's Silvia Cavalleri. Cavelleri has no doubt been boosted by runner up spot in the Italian Open just last week helping her to her best finish in the US here. Cavalleri is a fine player and was the US Amateur champion in 1997 suggesting some game and perhaps future. McGuire gets a cheque or $US58, 000.
Fiona Pike from South Australia was 13th, Jo Anne Mills a much-improved 18th, Jane Crafter 40th, Michelle Ellis 65th, Jan Stephenson 70th and Carmen Hajjar 77th.
