Exciting first day at Queensland Amateur

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2005) | Round One | 04 May 2005

32 players teed off this morning aiming to become the Queensland Amateur champion for 2005. The knockout matchplay tournament sees the leading 32 players from last week's Queensland Medal battle it out over the next three days at Redcliffe Golf Club. At the end of the day only eight players were left.

In the upset of the morning last week's Queensland Medalist, Kurt Carlson was defeated by Joshua Marris, 1 down.

The afternoon provided a number of interesting match ups and it was Ben Pisani, who played the day's best golf. He defeated Australian representative Andrew Dodt 7 & 5 and through the 13 hole match needed only 15 putts. If he was keeping a stroke score it would have showed -8 through 13 holes.

In another upset Nathan Roberts finished strongly to beat Justin Maker on the 19th hole. The players halved the 16th hole par 5 with eagles, with Roberts making bidies on the 17th and 19th holes to snatch victory.

Jake Younan Wise played well in his match against fellow Coolangatta-Tweed Heads club member Tony Wolsey finishing 1 up.

Play tomorrow will get underway at 7:30am, with the semi-finals to tee-off from 12:00pm.
