Aaron Pike wins Queensland Amateur

Aaron Pike (Indooroopilly) has deated Nathan Roberts (Pacific) 2 & 1 in the Queensland Amateur Championship final today at Redcliffe Golf Club just north of Brisbane. Both aged 19 years, Pike and Roberts played very good golf throughout the day, in what was a close match until mid-afternoon.
After 18 holes, the players went to lunch with the match square, however it was Pike that would take an early lead in the afternoon round that he would not relinquish. A birdie on the par 5 4th hole was not good enough for Roberts, when Pike made eagle to go 2 up.
Pike would then extend his lead through the mid-part of the afternoon and at one stage led 4 up after 31 holes. A late rally by Roberts at the 32nd and 34th holes was not enough however as the lead Pike had built up made it difficult for Roberts to get back into the match. They squared the 35th hole with par 4's and Pike thus became 2005 Queensland Amateur Champion.
The victory is certainly the highlight of the talented and affable Pike's career. Originally from Darwin, Pike moved to South East Queensland to attend school at the Hills Education Foundation at Jimboomba, and was a team-mate of last year's Queensland Amateur Champion Jason Day. Roberts himself also attended Hills for a short time, before relocating to the Gold Coast to complete his schooling. Both Roberts and Pike are presently scholarship-holders at the Queensland Academy of Sport Golf Program, based at the Golf Queensland State Training Facility adjacent to the Brookwater Golf Club.
It was a fitting end to an excellent Championship with the top 32 players from last week's Queensland Medal earning places in the field for the Amateur Championship.
Both players along with the majority of the field in the Queensland Amateur will now contest the Keperra Bowl at Keperra Country Golf Club, Queensland's National Selection Trial Event.
