The cream of Australian amateur golf are among a record 200 entries from throughout the world for the prestigious Riversdale Cup to be played at Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne in March.
Defending champion Scott Arnold, from NSW is heading the list, which will be pared down to 156 players for the final field of the 114th year of the Cup over 72 holes on 6-9 March 2009. Others include Victorian Open Amateur champion Luke Bluemink, New Zealand’s Aaron Baddeley Invitation champion, Ben Campbell; Australia’s Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup representatives Brendan Smith and Jason Scrivener and 18-year-old Scottish star Fraser Fotheringham.
Other international players from the United States, Ireland, Switzerland, Scotland, Singapore, New Zealand, Korea, and the Philippines are among the line up.
The Riversdale Cup is the second highest ranking amateur tournament in Australia on the R&A’s world ranking calendar. It is ranked 42nd in the top 50 tournaments in the world on the R&A Rankings, with the Australian Men’s Amateur Championship ranked 35th.
“We are faced with having to make one of the biggest cuts for many decades,” said Riversdale Golf Club General Manager, Bob Taylor.
“It is overwhelming that we have had such a record number of entries from such top quality players in tough economic times,” he said.
“We have to reduce the field to 156 and this is going to be very difficult when most of the players are off scratch or better,” he said. “The cut will be around the 1 handicap mark.”
