Queenslander Katherine Hull has cruised to a five shot victory at the ANZ Ladies Masters at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast today.
Hull, who is currently ranked 26th in the world, birdied her opening hole but it wasn’t until mid-way through her round that she gained momentum with a birdie at the 9th followed by back-to-back birdies at the 12th, 13th and 14th to move, at that stage, six strokes ahead of Tamie Durdin.
Hull’s only blemish of the day came at the final hole, which she bogeyed after catching a fairway bunker from the tee but with a five stroke buffer she could relax and take in first major victory on Australian soil.
“If anyone would have said to me that I would shoot four rounds in the 60s I would have been absolutely ecstatic,” said Hull, who collected a winner’s cheque for AUD$90,000.
“I dreamt about this as a kid. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. There are so many great names on the trophy and you walk past the framed pictures of the winners and you wish you had your picture up there. Now I’m going to be up there so I’m just stoked. I couldn’t have written the story any better this week.”
JLPGA veteran Tamie Durdin and South Korean teenager So-Yeon Ryu shared second place after Ryu, the 2008 KLPGA Rookie of the Year, made a stunning home run with four birdies over the closing four holes, while Durdin missed her par putt at the final hole for a costly bogey five.
World number five and 2008 LPGA Rookie of the Year, Ya-Ni Tseng, also left her best for last with four birdies in her final nine holes to close the day with a -6 (66) in equal 4th.
Six-time champion Karrie Webb will have to wait another year to claim her seventh title. The 34-year-old Queenslander never recovered from double-bogeying her opening hole and closed the day in equal 30th at three-under.
