Percy takes early lead at IFQ

Australasian PGA Tour | 2009 British Open International Final Qualifying | Round One | 10 Feb 2009

Victorian Cameron Percy has a two shot buffer on the rest of the field heading into the second round of today’s International Final Qualifying at Kingston Heath.

34-year-old Percy from Dingley in Melbourne shot a first round five under 67 in cool, breezy conditions at Kingston Heath Golf Club. Winner of the 2006 Queensland PGA and a member of the Australasian and Nationwide Tours, Percy went out on the front nine in 34 picking up his first birdie at the par four third.

Percy went on to bogey the 5th but quickly recovered with birdies at the 6th and 7th. He made the turn at two under then picked up consecutive birdies at the 12th and 13th, before finishing off with another on the final hole.

He holds a two shot lead from Queenslander’s Michael Wright and Peter Senior. Wright has qualified for the Open at IFQ before, at Kingston Heath in 2006 whilst Senior is a veteran of 17 appearances at the Championship, the last time in 2000 when it was held at St Andrews.

One shot further back is New Zealander Josh Geary, whose round of two under 70 has him alone in fourth place on and one shot ahead of Victorian Tim Wood and Sydney’s Anthony Summers.

43 players are contending for three places at this year’s Open Championship, which will be held at the Ailsa Course at Turnberry in Scotland in July.

The second round is currently underway with play expected to finish around 7:10pm tonight.
