Matthews, Hull creep closer at Aussie

BY Liz White | ALPG Tour | 2009 Women's Australian Open | Round Four | 15 Feb 2009

Little known Canberran Susie Matthews has given the Australian Open leaders something to think about, firing off two birdies after just three holes today to be 2 under for the tournament.

She is three shots off the leader, Korean Chang-Hee Lee who is due to tee it up in just under an hour’s time.

Katherine Hull has also played some great golf this morning and now sits at 2 under after three birdies in five holes on the demanding Metropolitan layout in Melbourne’s south.

Kristie Smith is well off the lead but is putting a great round together today. She went out in 4 under 33 and after 14 holes remains on 4 under today and 4 over for the tournament.

The young West Australian would be ruing what might have been after a first round 80 virtually destroyed any chance of victory.

Fellow West Australian Dana Lacey also got the adrenalin pumping today with a hole in one on the 140m par 3 second.

With the wind starting to pick up Hull and Matthews may well yet figure at the end of the day.
