Daniel Nisbet has fired an opening 5-under, 68, to take a three stroke lead following the first round of the Golf SA Amateur Classic at Royal Adelaide.
Nisbet, who is yet to secure his first National Trial event, made the turn after the front nine at 2-under-par with birdies on the first and seventh and followed that with an eagle at the 464m, par 5 15th hole. Nisbet’s round punctuated with just two bogeys on the 8th and 12th holes.
“It’s great to get off to a good start on a demanding layout like Royal Adelaide,” said Nisbet who finished tied for 6th at last week’s Mandurah Easter Amateur.
“I struggled a little this season to put four rounds together in a tournament. It’s being frustrating and hopefully this week here in Adelaide, I can do just that.”
Behind Nisbet is a group of four players at 2-under, including Craig Hancock, Max McCardle, Andre Na and Adam Boyer.
Bryden Macpherson, winner of the 2008 Dunes Medal is only four off the pace, opening with a 1-under, 72, whilst last week’s Mandurah Easter Amateur winner, Daniel Beckmann, is at 1-over along with Jordan Sherratt after both had a 74.
In Januray, Nisbet moved from Queensland to Victoria to be base himself at the Victoria Golf Club, situated on Melbourne’s famed sand belt region and is using that as his training ground for the immediate future.
“It’s working well,” he says about the move.
“Whilst I’ve not really had the start to the season that I was after, I feel everything is starting to fall into place. My score today reflected a solid round and I’m confident that it will keep going.”
