Scott Arnold fired an opening even-par 70 to be in tied 8th position and four behind leader, New Zealand’s Peter Spearman-Burn, following the first round of the New Zealand Amateur Stroke Play Championships in Auckland.
The next best Australian is Bryden Macpherson at 2-over-par and in a tie of 21st, followed by Asheen Ram who’s in a tied for 35th position.
Spearman-Burn’s opening 4-under,66, has the New Zealander a stroke ahead of Mathew Perry and Ben Taylor. Spearman-Burn has enjoyed a stellar season in New Zealand, winning twice in the North Island Amateur and South Island Amateur.
Ryan Fox, New Zealand’s top ranked amateur and semi-finalist at this year’s Australian Amateur started his campaign off in slow fashion with an opening 4-over-par, 74, to be well back in the field in a tie for 50th.
Matt Jager, Brendan Smith and Ben Weatherly will need to make their respective moves during tomorrow’s second round, as all three fired on opening 5-over-par, 75, to be in tied 65th position.
Ryan McCarthy also will need to be firing to survive the second cut of top 72 plus ties, with the Tasmanian Open and Amateur Champion scoring a 7-over-par 77 to be in tied 86th position.
