Macpherson makes move at NZ Amateur

Bryden Macpherson has moved to within three strokes of leaders, Chan Young Chung and Nicol Van Wyk, following the second round of the New Zealand Amateur Stroke Championships in Auckland.

Macpherson, winner of the 2009 Australian Amateur Stroke Play title last month, fired a second round 3-under-par, 67, after opening with a 72, to move seventeen places up the leaderboard to be currently at 1-under-par for the Championship.

First round leader, Peter Spearman-Burn, fired a disastrous 6-over-par, 76, after opening with a 66, to be in tied 9th position.

Chan Young Chung, a Korean-born native from Shandon Golf Club in Wellington, was the mover of the round firing the day’s low round of 6-under-par, 64, to be at 4-under-par. Nicol Van Wyk, from South Africa and winner of the 2008 (SA) Northern Open Amateur opened with rounds of 71-65 to be equal with Chung.

Australian Amateur Champion and the world’s highest ranked amateur competing in Auckland this week, Scott Arnold, remains in the hunt in tied 7th position with rounds of 70-71, to be at plus 1 for the Championship. Paul Griffiths is the next placed Australian in a tied for 31st at 6-over-par, after rounds of 74-72.

Matt Jager, winner of the Western Australian Stroke title last month, rebounded strongly to be around for the weekend with the world number 18 firing a second round 72 to be in a tie for 43rd at plus-7, after opening with a 75.

Ryan McCarthy is a stroke behind Jager at plus-8 with rounds of 77-71, with Ashween Ram and Ben Weatherly the remainder of the Australians making the weekend. Brendan Smith withdrew after opening with a 3-over-par 75.

The cut for the top 72 players and ties came at 11-over to contest the final two rounds tomorrow and Saturday at Titirangi Golf Club.
