Vancsik wins, Daly second in Italy

BY Bruce Young | European PGA Tour | 2009 Italian Open | Round Four | 11 May 2009

A final round of 65 at the BMW Italian Open in Torino, extended Daniel Vancsik’s third round lead to six shots and in doing so the Argentinean earned his second European Tour victory two years after his 2007 Madeira Islands Open win.

Vancsik effectively stole the tournament with a fast start to his final round leaving very little opportunity for the rest of the field. The 32-year-old then extended his lead further with three more birdies before a bogey at the 15th but by then it was all over.

The interest then turned to the race for second and John Daly, Raphael Jacquelin and Robert Rock would eventually share that position. Daly was rewarded for the amount of work he has done on getting himself in shape in the last few months and the 43-year-old joined Vancsik as the only player recording all four rounds in the 60’s this week. His final round of 66 not only gives him the share of second but will confirm for him the direction in which he is heading.

The best of the Australians was Peter O’Malley, who converted the good form he showed when he produced a third round of 64 to add a final round of 70 and he finished in a share of 8th for his best European Tour finish since his 4th place at the 2007 MasterCard Masters.

Wade Ormsby will be buoyed by his final round of 65 to finish 25th after a horror first few months in 2009. Marcus Fraser was 25th, Andrew Tampion 47th, Gareth Paddison was 54th and Brett Rumford after a good start was 70th.
