Argentine Vancsik leads in Italy

BY Bruce Young | European PGA Tour | 2009 Italian Open | Round Three | 10 May 2009

Argentine, Daniel Vancsik, might have dropped two shots in his last three holes at the Italian Open in Torino but he retains the lead by one over Finland’s Roope Kakko.

Vancsik appeared to be cruising when threatening weather stopped play late in his round and on his return he dropped shots at the 16th and 17th. His nearest pursuer, Kakko, would also drop a shot at the 17th and that pair will play with third placed Thomas Aiken, a decision made to play the final round in three balls to ensure a timely finish to the final round.

Both Kakko and Aiken are looking for their first wins on the European Tour, Aiken having played some very impressive golf in recent months including a 7th place finish at the World Golf Championship event at Doral.

Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin shares third position with Aiken at 9 under and just two behind the lead.

Ten players are within four shots of the lead including the leading Australasian Peter O’Malley whose brilliant third round of 64 moved him from 60th to a share of 7th.

Andrew Tampion is another shot back in a share of 11th, Gareth Paddison and Brett Rumford 37th, Marcus Fraser is 45th and Wade Ormsby 65th.
