Queensland’s Daniel Nisbet keeps on gathering momentum following an opening round of 64 at the Keperra Bowl in the final National Trial event of the Australian season.
Nisbet, who is seeking his forth win in a row, blasted around the Keperra Golf Club layout, taking full advantage of the short par 5’s, to post a 8-under-par opening round, to have a one stroke advantage over 2009 New Zealand Amateur Champion, Matt Jager.
15-year-old Cameron Smith, runner-up to Nisbet at last week’s Queensland Amateur Championship, is in third position with an opening 6-under-par, 66, followed one stroke back by Jared Consoli.
A group of eight players are currently in 5th position at 4-under-par, including Tim Hart, Brendan Smith and Lincoln Tighe.
Nisbet has been the in-form Australian amateur of late with wins at the Golf SA Amateur Classic, the Queensland Amateur Stroke and last week at at Nudgee Golf Club, the Queensland Amateur Championship .
The stage is being set for a possible showdown between Jager and Nisbet, two of our most promising talents to emerge from the amateur ranks for some time.
Earlier in the week they both predicted that low scoring around the 6056 metre, par 72 layout would dominate the tournament and the scores posted today confirms as much.
Sixty-four players scored par or better, which was just over forty percent of the field.
The cut will be determined following tomorrow’s second round with the the leading 70 players plus ties and National Squad members playing the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday.
