More Australasians through to US Open

Australians Matthew Jones, James Nitties, Steve Allan, Michael Sim and New Zealander Doug Batty have earned starts at next week’s US Open at Bethpage Black following successful days at the their respective Sectional Qualifying venues in Memphis, Tennessee, Columbus, Ohio, Columbine Valley, Colorado and Somis, California.

They will join seven other Australasians in the field for the second major of the year which starts on June 18th. Geoff Ogilvy, Robert Allenby, Adam Scott, Rod Pampling, Stuart Appleby, Michael Campbell and David Smail had already earned their starts through various other categories.

Jones recorded rounds of 70 and 65 at the two courses he played in Memphis and finished in a share of third position while Nitties survived a playoff against eight others for the 17th and final place available in Columbus, Ohio.

John Senden was one of Nitties’ opponents in the playoff in Columbus and may yet get through as the first alternate from his venue.

Allan led his qualifier at Columbine Valley in Colorado, earning one of the only two places available from that venue.

Sim finished joint runner up at his venue in Maryland and gets a chance to play his first US Open, while at that same venue Andrew Buckle finished as the second alternate.

New Zealander Doug Batty was a surprise inclusion in the field for Bethpage when he finished tied for second at his Sectional Qualifier in California.

In Memphis Marc Leishman was another unlucky playoff loser after missing out on a six way play-off for the one remaining spot at his venues there and just as Senden was in Columbus, he is the first alternate from Memphis.
