Michael Smyth has fired an opening round of 1-over-par at the Sunnehanna Amateur in the US to be the best placed Australian in a tie for 21st position.
The New South Wales Amateur Champion was quick out of the blocks this morning at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, carding a front nine 3-under-par, 32. Bogeys on the 10th, 15th and 16th, coupled with a double bogey on the 12th, resulted in Smyth playing the back nine to 4-over-par and costing him a potential top-10 slot.
American Kevin Foley fired a tournament equalling record 9-under-par, 61, to enjoy a three stroke lead over Cory Nagy.
Two-time winner at Sunnehanna and world number 1, Rickie Fowler, is dangerously placed in a tie for 4th position at 3-under-par, along with Mark Anderson, Brendan Gielow and Cameron Tringale.
The three other Australians competing this week are well placed in the middle of the field, with Ray Beaufils opening with a 2-over-par to be in a tie for 37th position, whilst Mitch Krywulycz is a stroke behind at 3-over-par and a tie for 48th position. Jin Jeong, winner of the 2008 Victorian State Amateur Medal, is currently at 5-over-par and in a tie for 62nd position.
