Augusta State collegiate player, Mitch Krywulycz, has finished the top placed Australian in a tie for 28th after the final round of the Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Krywulycz, a member of NSW Golf Club in Sydney, fired rounds of 73-71-71-71 to finish the tournament at 6-over-par and nineteen strokes behind the winner, American Kevin Foley.
Foley, ranked 69th in the World, coming into the Sunnehanna Amateur collected his maiden US major amateur title with rounds of 61-68-70-68, to finish at 13-under-par for a five stroke winning margin over fellow American Brian Harmon who finished at 8-under-par. Twice champion at Sunnehanna and World Number 1, Rickie Fowler, was third at 7-under-par.
Foley’s best finish in a major US amateur tournament prior to coming into the Sunnehanna was in 2007, where he finished in 5th position at the Monroe Invitational. He had also won numerous local titles including the IKE (MGA) tournament in 2008 and the IJGT Tour Championship in 2006.
Today’s victory sees his world ranking move to 36th and sets up the Pennsylvania State player’s US summer, moving into the main amateur events.
Ray Beaufils was the next Australian behind Krywulycz, finishing in a tie for 35th position at 8-over-par, with rounds of 72-73-69-74. The Sunnehanna Amateur was Beaufils’ first main tournament after an extended break and will give the Queenslander plenty of confidence in his remaining US starts.
Jin Jeong finished well down in the field in 56th position, whilst a closing 79 ruined Michael Smyth’s chances of a solid finish, with the New South Wales Amateur Champion closing in a tie for 57th position at 15-over-par.
