Kim leads Mizuno Open

BY Bruce Young | Japan Tour | 2009 Mizuno Open Yomiuri Classic | Round Two | 26 Jun 2009

29-year-old Korean golfer Hyung Sung Kim leads at the halfway stage of the Gateway to the Open Mizuno Open after his second round of 66 moved him clear of the five way share of the lead he had earned after round one.

Kim is in his first season on the Japan Golf Tour having played just one event on invite in 2008. In three starts in 2009 he has a best of 17th in the season opening Token Homemate Cup although he has also played several events on the Korean Tour this season.

Kim leads by one over the Japan Golf Tour’s superstar Ryo Ishikawa with Hidemasa Hoshino and defending champion Prayad Marksaeng two further back and sharing third position.

David Smail has returned from an unsuccessful trip to the US open to lead the Australasians into the weekend and at 2 under is in 23rd position. Brendan Jones is at 1 under, Japan Tour rookie Steve Jeffress at even par, Wayne Perske at 1 over and Paul Sheehan at 2 over completing the Australasians to make the cut.

Importantly the leading four players in this week’s field not otherwise exempt for the Open Championship at Turnberry earn starts in the event.
